Beltran's Article on Local Refugees Finds Audience in Africa

Beltran's Article on Local Refugees Finds Audience in Africa

Karla Beltran, one of Romance Studies’ senior French majors has just published an article in Le Confident, the most serious newspaper in Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic.

Beltran completed this work as an independent study this semester, working with Professor Deb Reisinger and journalist Geraldine Smith as part of the Borders Project through the Forum of Scholars and Publics. The article appeared in two parts on May 30 and May 31.

The newspaper Le Confident was founded in 2000. It was entirely looted by the rebels in 2013 (like most newspapers in Bangui), and its owner/publisher, Mathurin Momet, has been struggling to find money to relaunch it since then. Its circulation is currently between five hundred and several thousand, with readership at approximately 5000-8000. Copies are sold on the streets for 300 CFA a piece (Approximately 50 cents).

We are very pleased that the story of a Central African refugee in Durham written by a Duke student ended up in the streets of Bangui.

This article joins a series of student pieces published in the News and Observer this spring about the experiences and issues refugees face in Durham.

Congratulations Karla on having this article published in the Central African Republic!
