The City, Modernity, Gender, and Literature: Nineteenth-Century Madrid. The course will examine the intersections among four terms: the city, modernity, gender, and literature. We will focus on 19th-century Madrid. We will explore the following topics: the concept of the public sphere and its contradictions; the gendering of public and private spheres and of the experience of modernity; the problem of representation in , and of, the city; mass culture and the city; the realist novel and women in the streets. 3 units.
