EUROPE?  A FORTRESS BUTTRESSED AGAINST OUTSIDERS?


A new, collaborative seminar with the Nasher Museum investigating the opposite view: that the migration of peoples, ideas, and goods has defined & enriched European cultures over centuries. 

Organized around pairs of works from the literary and visual arts – with a historical focus. 


Major authors in Romance traditions including Montaigne, Froissart, Montesquieu.

Key pieces in Nasher collections: drawing, statuary, portable objects [ceramics, leather, metal].  

Critics-guides : art critic & writer, John Berger, A Seventh Man; Judith Butler, Dispossession.


Research driven, the seminar initiates students in the preparatory work leading to a small future exhibition at the Nasher.


Students can elect do all readings and written work in French.
