Haiti as a case study in global mental health approaches to traumatic stress. Explores the genesis of the diagnostic rubric of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and its relationship to local cultural contexts. Assesses critical and globalized approaches to adversity and shock reactions, with an emphasis on pioneering multi-site critical methodologies. Explores how global mental health practices have been analyzed and applied to Haiti by Haitian and non-Haitian practitioners. Fiction and prose by Edwidge Danticat will serve to bring historical and contemporary risks, ramifications, and co-morbidities of traumatic stress in Haiti into focus. Instructor: Jenson
