Congratulations to French double major Julie Uchitel, recipient of the prestigious Marshall Scholarship

Marshall Scholarship Winners

Congratulations to two Duke seniors who were awarded the prestigious Marshall Scholarship!  One of the winners, Julie Uchitel, is a neuroscience and French double major who while studying Proust, Flaubert, and neuroscience, draws connections between the humanities and the sciences. "For her, French literature is a way to understand this intersection.  She said that’s why she pursued a second major in French, reading such writers as Proust and Flaubert, studying abroad in France, and volunteering at a children’s hospital in Paris."  She later explains,“Proust provides a careful accounting of how we remember the past, while Flaubert's writings reveal his struggles with epilepsy,” (Duke Today). Additionally, Marshall Scholarship recipient, Julie Uchitel was interviewed by the Health Humanities Lab.  She explains how after her travels in France, she took the course Flaubert's Brain  with Professor Deborah Jenson, which furthered Uchitel's studies in pediatric epilepsy though integrating neuroscience and French.
