Exploration of the new culture of nineteenth-century Madrid as a modern city, with its crowds, cafés and shop windows, and how capitalism radically changed relationships, between human beings in general, and between men and women in particular. Course concludes with a look at the crisis of capitalism that began in 2008. Authors include Larra, Galdós, Pardo Bazán, Muñoz Molina, and others. Prerequisite: one Spanish course above Spanish 331S.
