Graduate alumni, Stephanie Reist was featured in Jacobin for her article, "Finding Marielle Franco's Killers" marking the one-year anniversary of the murders of city councilor Marielle Franco and her driver, Anderson Gomes. Arrests made an entire year after the assassination point toward an investigation "in which everything reeks of coincidence and conspiracy" (Reist). Evidence indicates that militias backed by Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro are involved, fostering the repression of human rights and freedoms through intimidation and assassination and that “the assassination and the cover up were, and continue to be, a political conspiracy” (Reist).
