How has being a graduate from Duke's Romance Studies Department helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"To be honest, I was a Computer Science and Spanish double major until my junior year at Duke. The summer before junior year I did some soul searching and realized that my true calling in life was Education. At the time, Education was not a major at Duke. I dropped Computer Science and enrolled in the Elementary Education program but kept Spanish as my major. Although, I did not fully embrace being a Romance Studies major I have always been happy that I have the use and knowledge of this beautiful language. Understanding Spanish culture, history and language has helped me be a more relatable and empathetic educator. Having an open mindset as well as being curious about other cultures and ways of life have helped me grow both personally and professionally."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Romance Studies programs?

"Spanish or other language majors Study abroad if at all possible! Take advantage of the opportunities Duke offers. Scrimp, safe, work more hours, do whatever it takes to make time to immerse yourself in your chosen language."
