Chi Dat (Daniel) Lam, B.A. 2017

Doctoral Student, University of Chicago

2017 Major: French and Biology; minor in Linguistics

"The French studies department has changed my future forever and for the better. Having started my journey in college with no plans to major in anything other than Biology, I stepped into my French classes and new horizons opened up in front of my very eyes: French and Francophone cultures, French cinema and most importantly, the humanities, something that eighteen-year-old me would not have even considered majoring. Yet I majored in French studies and I have never regretted that decision. The dedication and prowess of the professors, the strong departmental support and of course, the well-organized and amazing study abroad programs definitely reaffirmed that I have made the right choice. Graduated early in May this year and just recently settled in for my Linguistics PhD program at the University of Chicago, I cannot help reminiscing about discussions on French democracy with Professor Gonthier, or on Godardian films with Professor Saliot. Thank you, professors and the department, for allowing me to be where I am today, somewhere I truly belong, the humanities."
