Elementary Quechua

QUECHUA 102S

This course provides the second part of the introduction to Quechua language and culture. The course focuses on the Ancash region of central Peru, but also emphasizes the diversity of the Quechua language family—the most widely spoken Indigenous language of the Americas, with more than ten million speakers throughout the Andean region, from Colombia to Argentina. The course will provide students with basic grammatical knowledge and verbal skills for everyday conversation and of the Ancash Quechua language in relation to units on Quechua culture and history. Students will begin to move beyond memorized conversation routines to improvise using their knowledge of the language, and will learn more about issues surrounding language politics in the Andes. Prerequisite: QUECHUA 101S.
