Global Hispanophone in Translation

SPANISH 361S

Emphasis on hemispheric and Hispanic lit: ethical and social conflicts as well as stylistic strategies. Possible readings will vary to include any of the following: (1) such canonical authors as Marti, Borges, Carpentier, Garcia Marquez, Cortazar; (2) newer writers exploring traumatic memory and the ethics of mourning (Poniatowska, Bolano, Dorfman, F. Vallejo); (3) global poets who channeled chants of protest (Neruda, N. Guillen, Mistral, Lorca, Paz); (4) English-language writers who've translated Hispanic images and contexts for a world audience, from Lawrence, Porter and McCarthy to Ortiz Cofer and J. Diaz. Student responses to ethical and political dilemmas will be constantly encouraged.
